❝We have this strength inside of us, and yet we are taught to always keep it down. I found in my life that I've taken a step back and made myself smaller in order to try to fit in, and that hasn't worked. We have to learn to kind of embrace what makes us unique, and embrace our strength - and then if people don't like it, fuck it.❞

Please comment to be added.

I love making new friends, but I'm not interested in adding people just to up my numbers. Writing here is important to me, and I would love to add people who I have some things in common with. If we have shared interests and you think we'd get along please feel free to drop me a comment! Just let me know who you are and how you found me ♡

This week's thefridayfive:

What toys were popular when you were a kid? It was the late '90s so it was stuff like Tamagotchi's, Furbies, Pogs/Tazos (which I never knew what to do with, I just liked the pictures on them). I remember the time everyone who was anyone in elementary school had a yoyo and I learnt how to Walk The Dog and do The Elevator. I'd spend a long time practising at home to impress my friends the next day, I was really into it.

What musicians were popular when you were a teenager? I don't know what was mainstream popular, but I was really into nu metal, pop punk, and emo and stuff - Linkin Park, Slipknot, Blink-182, A, My Chemical Romance, HIM, Nightwish, etc. I still listen to it all quite often, my music taste hasn't really changed. I was all about Kerrang! magazine, is that thing still going?? I even got a letter published in it once and got a £20 HMV gift card, I was so proud!

What unique personality traits do you think you have in common with others born around the same time as you? I don't know. It was a weird time to grow up because the first major world event I was old enough to remember is 9/11 and the war that followed, and when I was leaving secondary school the economy crashed. I feel like everyone born around the same time as me got repeatedly fucked over the most by those in control, is that a personality trait?

Do you think stereotypes about your generation are accurate? I'm at the young end of Millennial, and that's always felt weird to me. I was too young to even really remember the millennium, but there are Millennials who were old enough to drink alcohol and go clubbing in 2000, so I don't really understand how that's even considered the same generation? To be honest I've always related to "Gen Z" more so idk.

What do you admire about other generations That they had free higher education and affordable property rates? I admire the Greatest Generation and Silent Generation who endured WWII, I have a lot of time for those people and they experienced things we'll never truly understand. I don't see much to admire about anyone else, particularly with the political climate right now.

I spend my cash on looking flash and grabbing your attention

I'm really excited by this thefridayfive! Especially as boxes of my belongings I shipped to myself finally arrived from Japan and I've spent the week doing LOTS of laundry, ironing, steaming, and just trying to get the musty smell out of everything that's been sailing across the world to me for the past 12 weeks. I'm so, so excited to have all of my favourite clothes back!

1) Have you ever done something awful to your hair? What happened? The first time I ever cut my own fringe (bangs) I leant forward in the mirror and accidently gave myself a Bettie Page style (but unlike Bettie Page it did not look good on me!) I bleach my hair a lot, and in the past I've had it go orange or turn to cotton candy from over processing it. I can't say I care though, it's all a learning curve and now I can cut, style, and dye my hair by myself without any issues as I know what works and what doesn't.

2) Conversely, at what time in your life have you looked your best? I don't think I look bad now to be honest. I'd like to lose a few pounds, but wouldn't we all?

3) Do you have a favorite article of clothing? Tell us what and why. I have so, so many. I rarely buy clothes now, a few years ago I made the decision to only invest in pieces I really love and sold everything else so opening my wardrobe is an absolute joy every morning. I love my Frozen Secret Honey clothes, especially my Hans dress and coat as he's my favourite character. I have a handful of Eastern European folk costume pieces which I adore, and I love my Emily Temple Cute dresses from Japan, they hold a lot of fond memories and some of them I've had for almost 10 years now.

Top are my favourite Secret Honey Frozen dresses - L-R Elsa, Hans, and Hans's coat. Secret Honey are a Japanese brand that make casual wearable versions of Disney character outfits. And bottom is a quick outfit I threw together showing my Emily Temple Cute Wizard of Oz dress and one of my vintage Polish vests - I've never worn these together but now I think it might be a look?

4) Confess the worst fashion trend you ever succumbed to. I've had a lot of 'phases' - I've been a goth, a hippy, I've dressed head to toe vintage, I've been a Lolita, but I'm proud of every one of them because it helped me find myself. I've never, ever worn something just because it was what everyone else was wearing and I only have that confidence because of all of the different fashion phases I've been though thickening my skin over the years. I wouldn't call any of them the worst because I wouldn't have the confidence I have now if I hadn't worn it, and if I thought I looked cute at the time then so what?

5) Are there any clothing/fashion trends today that you simply don't understand? I don't understand wearing a tracksuit when you're not going to the gym/exercising. People act like "real clothes" are uncomfortable which I don't understand because I wear some really elaborate clothes and they're HECKING comfortable. Most of my dresses are shirred, my skirts all have elasticated waists, or I wear loose fitting linen or jersey dresses when I want something simpler that still looks cute. So I never understand this assumption that looking nice = discomfort because it's just not true.

Gotta feel for my automobile

I had to do this thefridayfive because I miss driving sooo much!! I can't wait to get a car, but obviously there's no point getting one right now when I'm not going anywhere...

1) Do you like to drive? YES. To me driving is freedom, and I love nothing more than an open road.

2) Do you own (or have regular use of) a car? What kind is it? Not right now. My last car was a little Vauxhall Viva and I loved it, it was like my little home on wheels and it never let me down. I've got my eye on potentially getting a Volkswagen Up for my next car as I like small city cars but I need something reliable for long distances.

3) What is your favorite optional feature on a car? Something to plug my iPod into so I don't have to mess around with third party devices. I know I'm out of date using iPods still but I don't like to waste money on streaming services, and obviously iPods aren't Bluetooth. My last car had a USB plug that connected directly to the radio and it was the best optional extra EVER.

4) How much does gasoline currently cost where you live? I think it's around £1.20 per liter? For my US friends a liter is 0.2 gallons and £1.20 = $1.65. Fuel is really expensive here, it cost about 60p per liter when I lived in Japan which I was constantly mad amount.

5) What is the longest car trip you have taken? I live in a small country so it's all relative, but I used to drive 350 miles between my parents house and my uni. When I had my interview to get into university I did it all in one day - drove 350 miles there, had the 15 minute interview then jumped back in the car and drove 350 miles home. So 700 miles in one day is my longest, and it absolutely wiped me out. But pre-Covid I used to go down to London for day trips quite often and that's a 300 mile round trip. I'll gladly drive anywhere though which is how I've seen so much of the country.
